Walkthrough

There’s not an obvious linear path through this puzzle – it’s kind of about exploring and guessing the meaning of symbols.
The biggest lateral leap to make is that you are tracing paths through the grid.
The birds act as guides to help you find known paths.
The easiest leg up that the birds give you are unique letters (like ‘J’ and ‘Q’, and (in the section numbers), unambiguous coordinates for the starts of paths.
‘Jay’ (volume 1) is in fact the clearest bird to start with, as it provides you with the simplest path, and one that entirely moves in increments of one, spelling ‘JAY’ in a little ‘L’ shape. The fact that the right-most symbol is the same in all of the steps is supposed to clue you in to its meaning: move one step. The other symbols then can clue you in to their meaning, directions ‘east’ and ‘north’.
Once you have these, you can start deducing what the remaining symbols mean, and trace any number of birds. Ultimately, the birds are only there to help you learn the meaning of the symbols. Once you have them, you can start a path at any of the squares that has a symbol as a header, and the resulting path will give you words.
These resulting words are listed below:

N. THE
W. ACCESS
S. CODE
E. IS

1. FIVE
2. TWO
3. TWO
4. (runs off the page)

This code was the combination to the mystery box on location, and the team that opened it won the ‘mystery’.
